Family Portraits and Your Family Pet

Fall is here! Cooler weather, pumpkin spice everything, falling leaves. Now is the MOST popular time to get a family portrait update done, just in time for your holiday cards. Wouldn't it be great to include ALL the members of your family? No, not just the grandparents, but your dog!

But My Dog Won't Behave

This is where my expertise comes in handy. Believe it or not, allowing your dog to explore the photo location a bit before diving right into a session is a great way to get all that curiosity or anxiety out. Once they have acclimated a bit, we can then use various ways to get those great shots!

  • Treats! I keep dog training treats on hand. I always ask beforehand if your dog is allergic or is not allowed treats. If so, I highly recommend cooked chicken bites.
  • Sounds! Squeakies, their favorite toy, a ball, a whistle. I will often play animal sounds on my phone to garner that cute head tilt.
  • Praise! Not just food, but loving praise allows your dog to understand that what they just did (sat still for a millisecond or stared at my camera) was being a "good boy!".

Prepare for a Photo Session With Your Dog

It is equally important that after your dog gets used to a location, that they are comfortable. Be sure to pack a bag to include the following items:

  • treats
  • water and water bowl
  • a 6ft leash and a long lead if you have one
  • dog brush
  • pet wipes
  • waste bags!
